Recoating a failed flat roof rarely holds

Water stains spreading across a ceiling, a roof gutter that never fully dries, damp creeping down a parapet — these usually mean the waterproofing layer above has already failed. Brushing another coat over the top buys a few months. It seldom fixes the problem.

Torch-applied membrane works differently. A thick, polyester-reinforced bituminous sheet is melted onto a primed surface with an open flame, so it bonds across the whole area rather than sitting loosely on top. Every overlap is heat-welded, every upstand and drain is detailed by hand, and the finished layer flexes with the slab instead of cracking with it.

It is the system we recommend wherever water genuinely collects and sits — flat roofs, exposed decks, gutters and planter boxes.

Why torch-on membrane outlasts a coating

Most flat-roof leaks are not a material problem — they are a bonding and detailing problem. Torch-on addresses both.

Fully Bonded, Not Just Laid

Every square metre is torched down onto a primed substrate. Because there is no loose cavity underneath, water cannot travel sideways and surface somewhere far from the actual fault.

Thick, Reinforced Sheet

3mm and 4mm membranes carry a polyester core that flexes with the slab and stands up to ponding, foot traffic and years of sun — not a thin film that wears through.

Sealed Laps & Upstands

Overlaps are heat-welded, upstands carried high, and drains, outlets and pipe collars detailed individually — the exact joints where cheaper systems fail first.

Our torch-on membrane services

From a single leaking roof gutter to a full rooftop deck — one accountable team handles diagnosis, preparation, membrane installation and water testing.

Flat Roof & RC Deck

Full torch-on membrane systems for flat roofs, concrete decks and rooftop terraces, laid to fall and finished to suit exposed or screeded surfaces.

Roof Gutters & Drainage Channels

Lined and sealed gutters, channels and box drains — the areas that hold standing water longest and are almost always the first to leak.

Planter Boxes, Kerbs & Upstands

Membrane carried up kerbs, parapets and planter walls with proper fillets and corner detailing to stop seepage into rooms and units below.

Car Porches, Awnings & Walkways

Waterproofing for car porch roofs, covered walkways and awning slabs, with clean edge terminations that will not lift or peel back.

Solar & Plant Room Decks

Membrane systems for roofs carrying solar arrays, water tanks and M&E plant, detailed around every mounting foot and penetration.

Re-Waterproofing & Overlay

Stripping or overlaying failed membrane and coatings, restoring falls and outlets, and reinstating a properly bonded watertight layer.

How we work — five clear steps

01

Site Inspection & Leak Diagnosis

We inspect the roof, deck or gutter, trace where water is actually entering, and confirm whether torch-on membrane is the right system for the surface.

02

Surface Preparation & Falls

Failed membrane and coatings are removed, cracks and honeycombing repaired, corner fillets formed, and falls corrected so water actually reaches the outlets.

03

Bituminous Primer

The prepared substrate is primed and left to cure, giving the membrane a clean, dust-free surface to fuse to instead of bonding to loose material.

04

Torch-On Membrane Installation

Sheets are rolled out and torch-bonded across the full area with sealed overlaps, membrane carried up all upstands, and collars formed at drains and pipe penetrations.

05

Water Test, Protection & Handover

We pond-test the area, check every termination, then apply screed or protective finish where required before handing back a confirmed watertight surface.

We work with proven SBS and APP torch-applied membranes in 3mm and 4mm thicknesses, with sand-faced or mineral granular cap sheets chosen according to whether the surface will be left exposed, screeded over or tiled.

Why building owners choose Everyday Renovations

1

Direct Specialist, Not a Middleman

One accountable team from quote to handover — the people you speak to are the people holding the torch on your roof.

2

Transparent, Nett Pricing

Clear quotes by area and membrane thickness, with no hidden costs and no surprise GST add-ons.

3

Trained Torch-On Crew

Heat-bonded work is only as good as the hands applying it. Our crew laps, terminates and details every joint properly instead of rushing the sheet down.

4

Water-Tested Warranty

We pond-test before handover and back the work with a workmanship warranty, so you know the surface is watertight before we leave.

Frequently asked questions

What is torch-on membrane waterproofing?

It is a thick bituminous sheet, reinforced with a polyester core, that is rolled out and bonded to the surface using an open flame. The heat melts the underside of the sheet so it fuses to the primed substrate and to the neighbouring sheet at every overlap, forming one continuous waterproof layer.

Is torch-on better than a liquid PU or acrylic coating?

For flat roofs, RC decks, gutters and planter boxes where water genuinely collects and sits, torch-on is usually the more durable choice because of its thickness and reinforcement. Liquid systems still suit complex shapes, small wet areas and locations where an open flame is not permitted. We will tell you honestly which one your situation calls for.

How long does torch-on membrane last?

Installed on a properly prepared surface and protected with screed, tiles or a mineral cap sheet, a torch-applied system commonly lasts well over ten years. Exposed membrane with poor falls and standing water will always age faster, which is why we correct falls as part of the works.

Do you have to hack off the existing surface?

Not always. Where the existing layer is sound and well bonded we can often overlay it. Where the old membrane has blistered, debonded or trapped water underneath, it has to come off — otherwise the new sheet is bonded to a failure. We confirm this at inspection.

Can we screed, tile or walk on it afterwards?

Yes. Torch-on membrane is regularly screeded and tiled over for roof terraces and walkways. For roofs that stay exposed we finish with a granular cap sheet that handles UV and light foot traffic for maintenance access.

Is it safe to use an open flame on my roof?

Our crew works to standard hot-works precautions — clearing combustibles, protecting adjacent finishes, keeping extinguishers on hand and carrying out a fire watch after torching. On sites where flame is restricted we will propose a self-adhesive or liquid alternative instead.

How long will the work take?

A single roof gutter or small car porch is often one to two days. A typical rooftop deck runs three to seven days depending on area, preparation needed and weather, since the substrate must be dry before priming and torching.
